Blood is thicker than water: HKCIEA donates $500,000 to earthquake-stricken Qinghai, Gansu (29 December 2023)

On 18 December 2023, the prefecture of Linxia in Gansu Province was struck by a 6.2-magnitude earthquake, killing more than 130 people and causing damages to the local infrastructure. Many local people were also left homeless! It was winter time and the disaster-stricken areas were severely affected. Support is badly needed to help people hit by the disaster to overcome the tough times and for the areas to carry out post-disaster reconstruction.

In the morning of 29 December, the Hong Kong Chinese Importers’ and Exporters’ Association (HKCIEA) handed HK$500,000 over to the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Hong Kong to support the disaster relief work in Gansu.

HKCIEA President Pui Kwan-kay, Vice President and Honorary Secretary Wan Hang-ping, Honorary President and HKCIEA Charity Foundation Chairman Lam Long-on, Vice President Andrew Chan Shiu-shan, Vice Honorary Secretary Sophia Lee Shuk-woon, and Executive Director Cheung Man-ka handed over a cheque bearing the donation amount to the Liaison Office. Zhu Wen, Director-General of the Coordination Department of the Liaison Office, represented the Liaison Office to receive the cheque.

HKCIEA hopes to be able to help people in the disaster-stricken areas in Gansu to go through the hard times. It also supports reconstruction and development of the areas. He also promised to convey HKCIEA’s well wishes to compatriots in the quake-stricken areas.
